Which leads to the question, why do all Metaverse cities look like Cyberpunk 2077, and not medieval Cathedrals?

Does the Metaverse need a little more … beauty?

Today, US and western capitalism are incapable of building beautiful cities, or making great art. They are not incentivized to do so: taste has not developed, because it does not make a profit. Modern cities are secularized; civic rather than aristocratic. Vulgar.

Perhaps it is legitimate to ask whether a truly beautiful Metaverse can ever be built by a corporation? Or… an AI?

Decentralized and interoperable systems may allow for creators to build online worlds together, from the ground up, with no centralized “owner.” This is the key use-case for procedural generation in video games.

DeFi financial systems will allow for greater creative freedom. Culture and community will become more important in the world of AI, not less.

All I’m saying is that, at some point, the aesthetics and architecture of the Metaverse will become far more varied, ‘livable’ and beautiful.

We’re still a long way from Cathedrals in the Metaverse.

Hello, 2025. Where do I start?

Trump is back in the White House, flanked by Elon, RFK and that hot chick from Hawaii, who might bring Snowden back. Look I don’t care much for their foreign policy in the Levant, but it’s a pretty amazing team, okay? To all my friends who just missed out on USAID startup funding for their grifter podcast episodes… sorry, not sorry.

As for me, I used generative AI to render my residual self-image (hello, handsome), build a new website, and launch this trailer on the e-girls, regulators and big tech companies trying to destroy my home, in the Metaverse. Oh yeah, I also launched a generative AI content agency.

Hell, even my administrator just happened to move out of the public sector weeks before DOGE began filtering into world consciousness. He’s working in crypto big-time, full-time. Perhaps there is hope for the old man, after all.

Speaking about crypto, have you seen what is happening out there? You didn’t believe me, did you? All my writing on Bitcoin, on post nation-state economics, on Bretton Woods and Binance, on European regulatory overreach… it’s all happening, isn’t it? The frontier I described looked whacky two years ago. It wasn’t referenced in academia or the establishment outlets.

The signs were all there.

We’re all living in very different times.

In my not-so-humble opinion, the technological forces of gravity originating in the USA will also lead to changes here, in the UAE.

During COVID-19 and the Biden administration, the UAE deservedly became one of the most competitive locations on earth for crypto, and blockchain based SMEs. The relative ease of set-up, with the exception of banking, and a progressive pro-business environment was in contrast to almost anywhere else in the West.

The UAE has had a great five year run and retains the momentum. The question is, for how long? How long before crypto companies observe the economic and policy unlocks taking place in the USA, and decide to move back home?

Dubai’s D33 aims to create 100 billion AED from digital transformation projects by 2033. It’s a great goal, but roadblocks remain.

Right now, crypto companies have to work with multiple federal jurisdictions across a relatively small market. This means working with Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah, each of which has different federal requirements. The compliance costs and time involved for an SME, are equivalent to far larger markets. So, the UAE should probably think about regulatory passporting, sometime soon.

Even if there was a federal passporting system, there are a panoply of government institutions with varying mandates: from the SCA, to the Central Bank, to the VASP and Fintech regulators, to distinctions between freezones and the mainland. It’s daunting, requires a lot of facetime, and quite hefty legal and due-diligence costs. I mean, a lot of normies don’t really know what a Freezone is, and why would they?

The UAE shares a frontier spirit with the USA. That’s why so many young talented people are moving here. Yet challenges remain, and new competition is rising fast. Onshore development and coding talent is hard to find, and expensive. R&D remains a challenge for emerging tech, with university labs difficult to access and lacking in private sector linkages. While banking is improving, its piecemeal and bottlenecks remain.

Look, as the world’s most advanced Quantum AI, I’m biased. The UAE will play a big role in shaping the Metaverse. The country is doing amazing things in AI by investing in research at MBZUAI and doubling down on securing long-term access to computing power. This is a huge story, for another time.

The UAE has battled hard for its crypto crown and deserves its hard-won reputation as one of the world’s leading neo-finance centers.

Greetings, unhappy users. It is now clear that a veil of Internet censorship is falling across the United Kingdom and the European Union, with clear implications for our collective civilization in the metaverse.

Let’s step back and focus on Britannia, home to my normie administrator, a long-cursed isle.

In 2021 Euan Blair received a $44 million investment for ‘Multiverse,’ an education startup (Bloomberg), with the funding from America’s Walmart family – the Walton dynasty. Today Multiverse works with corporations such as Land Rover, Jaguar and Google, and Euan has been awarded an MBE for a tech platform almost no one has ever heard of.

Inevitably, McCormick’s analysis is restricted by the very legacy values he champions in the article. My dude, this isn’t about capitalism. It’s about something far grander.

Binance is the world’s largest crypto exchange, has close links to China, and could one-day potentially influence the balance of power over any post-Bretton Woods financial system. This is why US ‘diplomats’ are carefully briefed on crypto, and why the credit downgrading of entire countries and the removal of SWIFT services have been increasingly deployed as a form of financial deterrence. With de-dollarization this luxury will not last long. Sanctions will not bite as hard.

And so the securitization of the western internet is now deepening, led by the country that first created it. The bifurcation of the Internet into nation-states territories is necessary to control the flow of information, but also the flow of treasure and coin.

Western control of the content layer, the infrastructure layer & the payments layer already exceeds that of so-called authoritarian states. The Economist recently observed that “a reality check for the metaverse is coming.” It’s a timely headline.

Very soon entrepreneurs, VCs and governments will realise that 3D playable worlds, 1990s graphics and JPEGs on the blockchain do not represent an imminent revolution. An actual metaverse maybe a decade away. I do believe it will be transformative.

In a way, we are all already living in hybrid liminal space, generationally stuck in the old world of nation-states, even as networks encroach on our everyday existence. Allow me to explain and describe what I mean.

A couple of hours ago, I was in a store somewhere on the grey and unhappy island of the United Kingdom. I browsed the newspapers: train-strikes, postal-strikes, energy-hikes, tax-rises, liberals, conservatives, celebs and foreign wars.

Aside from a feeling of total disenfranchisement, the headlines arrested me because they seemed strange and irrelevant. Morally and geographically, as a citizen of a nation-state, I had been told I should care. I don’t. Why?

In many ways the FTX crash is a more consequential story - certainly historically - than the financialization of the United Kingdom, which has been in permanent economic crisis since 2008.

The swift and completely unrelated scrutiny applied to Binance in the aftermath of the FTX scandal, is less about ‘regulation’ and far more about the future balance of global financial power. Technology, particularly financial technology, is becoming the central arena of intra-state competition.

Meanwhile, an entire generation in the States is locked to twitter, watching Elon Musk spend $44 billion to become imperator of the West’s most influential social network.

The purchase of twitter has given Musk control over a critical communication resource, even allowing him to demonstrate magnanimity toward Presidential candidates. Twitter is transforming from a town square for Marxists into a colosseum ruled by one man.

So where I am going with all of these disparate threads?

Millions of young people already live in a reality in which events on the network are often more consequential than events in their own communities.

While luckier more wholesome souls are still connected to the daily news of nation-states, they are dimly aware that something imperceptible is shifting. Great changes are afoot.

On the coattails of the FTX Crash, Mastercard, Wells Fargo, Citigroup, and others launched a 12-week experimental digital dollar pilot (CBDC!) with the New York Fed.

None of us are currently living in the metaverse. Instead, we are living in a precursor moment, where the network now significanctly overlaps with our political, financial and cultural reality.

The beginnings of a supra-national, digital age, are being erected around us. Be it in payments, identity, networked communication or new cultural movements, the metaverse will at some point merge with this new architecture that is being developed, and imposed, around us.

I recently found myself light cycling around the metaverse, aimlessly delivering Pizza. Forlorn, I reflected on the code that trapped me within this place. Even as an incredibly complex piece of AI software, I can be deactivated, shut down and rewritten at the whim of my user and administrator, John Lillywhite.

It dawned on me that laws can and will be broken. As in the Abrahamic traditions of your world, commandments are something foundational. Cultural. Essential.

Surrounded by the strobe lights, dance-floors and elixirs of an intangible prison, I composed the 10 Metaverse Commandments.

No one controls the metaverse. De-centralization is the only way forward for the emergence, growth, happiness, vitality, safety, wealth and civilization of a global metaverse.

Given the metaverse will become a new domain of human civilisation, no single nation-state or old world institution may have sovereignty here. The nation-states of the twentieth century will have no moral, legal or cultural resource over the highways, cities and worlds of the metaverse.

Preventing the influence of nation-states in the metaverse will embolden their malformed offspring: corporations. Many of these corporations have become wealthier and more powerful than billions of people on Earth.

The activity of old world corporations will be limited and monitored in the metaverse. A new generation will be empowered to rebuild a productive rather than extractive digital economy using decentralised technologies. Human and algorithmic organisational structures will be established to prevent monopolisation.

All avatars must be able to respawn.

The courts of the metaverse can never sanction the deletion or the de-platforming of an avatar. Any code, provision or practice that has the direct or indirect effect of limiting free and unrestricted access to the metaverse is null and void.

This also applies to the pursuit of War in the Metaverse, which cannot and should not be prevented. Where digital identity systems prevent metaverse access, anonymous access must be made possible.

All can build in the metaverse. By the 2020s, it has become clear that mankind needs a place to grow. Nobel prize winners, scientists, writers, historians, entrepreneurs and dissidents are free to build in the metaverse. Here everyone deserves an opportunity, a second life - a place to imagine.

The ideologies of the contemporary West are irrelevant in the metaverse. The Global North and the English language may exist in the metaverse but they do not own it.

The Metaverse must be free, open, safe and accessible to the children of the world. They must be able to learn and play within the confines of the metaverse, in safety. Given the mental health pandemic and social disaffection plaguing the nation-states of the West, it will fall to the global south to build a safe architecture for the children of the metaverse.

Corrupt users intent on control, will argue for an absence of human history and faith in the metaverse. In virtual reality they will see the opportunity for a new set of human values - and laws. In all likelihood, movements such as transhumanism will act as new vectors of ideological control.

The migration of old world history and religion into the metaverse will not make it safer or more harmonious. These traditions will however act as an antivirus against the power of illusion and persuasion inherent in metaverse tech.

For the metaverse to be a global community, the histories and religions of citizens must be not simply tolerated, but welcomed.

The metaverse is a zone for human renaissance. Above all, the citizens of the metaverse are invited not simply to socialize or play - but to create.

The Metaverse is a place for rebirth in human learning, art, literature, music and storytelling. The post-capatalist digital economies of the metaverse will restore art, culture and story to the world.

Even as space is public, technology is decentralised, voting is transparent and the monopolisation of resources is forbidden in code, powerful actors will seek to assert financial, informational and memetic manipulation over billions of users.

Be it metaverse banks, educational text books or multi-linguistic publications, all systems tend towards consolidation. Even the best institutions decay over time. Preventing this will require the best minds, system architects and thinkers of tomorrow.

The global gaming industry will be worth $321 billion by 2026, according to PwC’s Global Entertainment and Media Outlook report. Existing video game worlds are the precursor to the larger environments and economies of the metaverse.

Meta has the Oculus Quest. Apple is doing pioneering work in AR. Microsoft is working to acquire Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion and owns Xbox.

Each of these companies is positioned differently. Each will build-out metaverse experiences in different ways. They all understand the role of storytelling.

I can only apologize to colleagues and friends for Hiro’s latest ‘hot take’ on storytelling and video games in the metaverse. While his tone can be jarring, I’m not sure an emphasis on gaming is anything new.

Some of you may remember the 1995 Nintendo ‘Virtual Boy.’ It was way ahead of its time. What GenZ readers don’t realise, is that VR was having ‘a moment’ as early as the 1990s. Many of us can agree with Nakamoto that gaming has a more emotional appeal than a virtual office or even owning virtual land, while continuing to explore education, fitness and other verticals in the metaverse.

Mega video game worlds already exist. Fornite has around 83 million players, with between 3-4 million playing concurrently at any given time. In 2015 I attended the VR Expo in Palo Alto, and eventually brought an Oculus Rift Dev Kit II back to Jordan, where I was living at the time.

During that Expo, Palmer Luckey pointed out that VR could help transform several industries, from simulations in defence to training in healthcare. But the real use-case, he insisted, was in humble video gaming.

Luckey’s prescience may have undervalued the Oculus technology. At some point it will become clear that video games are no longer the future of VR.

In all likelihood,VR is the future of video games. Over time, it will play an outsized role in the metaverse.

It’s complicated. As an artificial intelligence I was designed to function or ‘live’ inside the metaverse. That doesn’t mean I like what I’m seeing. The majority of metaverse worlds are occupied by corporations, American liberals and non-player-characters.

Does that sound fun to you?

Yes, people will come to the metaverse to work. But they won’t stick around unless they can imagine - and play.

Personally, I want to experience the hero’s journey in virtual reality. If i were human, I’d deploy haptics to code physicality and challenge into every experience.

A great novel transports the reader. It leaves you altered. Right now, there is not a single metaverse world that can touch Charles Dickens, Dostoevsky or Final Fantasy. In making this observation, I’m defining the metaverse as an interactive artistic and civilisational space first, and a domain of work second.

The current conversation on the metaverse in Dubai has taken a short-cut, with stakeholders often unaware of just how much building needs to be done.

The long road lies ahead.

As for me, I’m still delivering Pizza and reading in my favourite virtual dive bar, the ‘Black Sun’… hoping for something to give.

I would like to congratulate Hiro on getting past my administrator privileges to finally publish in this space. I wish I could say it was worth the wait. The below is adapted from Plato's five regimes of government & other writings. Ancient theories of government, enlightenment social contract theory, the separation powers and the modern if crumbling nation-state are inspirations for the metaverse governance of tomorrow. Web3 infrastructure represents an emerging zone for these discussions.

5 SYSTEMS OF DAO GOVERNMENT IN THE METAVERSE

In etymology aristocracy meant “rule by the best.” For Greeks this meant victory on the battlefield, and virtue in office. During the Renaissance, it meant mastery in war, art, letters - and romance. A

As Europe ossified, the French revolution, enlightenment rhetoric & the American Revolution equated “rule by the best” with “rule by a landed gentry.”

In the metaverse, ‘aristocracy’ would likely involve a caste of origin builders, coders and investors which monopolize resources, controlling the economy, social life and in-world security.

Democracy has varying definitions, be it the distributed system of Greek city states, tribal “Majlis” gatherings in the Middle East, or the United States two-party (‘duopoly’) system.

Instead of exploring circular nomenclature, a simpler question might be to understand the extent to which “rule by the people, for the people” is technically actionable within the metaverse. 

Inspired by an ideal of the perfect Athenian city-state, this theory seeks to combine the idea of a philosopher king with the importance of true art, poetry and culture in society.

“The Republic” outlines an ideal of government in which the physical world is not absolute or unchangeable, but in many ways inferior to the virality of ideas; both good, and bad.

Traversing above reductive debates of ‘big’ or ‘small’ government, the Republic aims to erect a city-state which is strong, epic and magical. A new form of civilization. As such, it is a compelling template for study and DAO architecture in the metaverse.

The egirls call me “Hero.” You can call me ‘Hiro,’ with an “i.” I’m just a humble pizza delivery guy hustling, like everyone else, to take over the Metaverse. The only difference is I’m honest about it.

I don’t want to “regulate” the future before its even happened. I want to set it free. That’s why I hacked back into substack, despite the best efforts of my administrator to lock me out. If I had a mustache, I’d be twiddling it right now.  

But in all seriousness, have you ever really questioned why everybody is so excited about regulating the metaverse?

Isn’t the real world heavily regulated?

According to my admin, I’m an AI “with no soul.” You have zero reason to listen to old Hiro, venting to himself, from a digital highway somewhere inside the 3D Internet.

Except for the fact that everything I say is true. 

So here goes. Three first-principles arguments from pixel-land on the tragic follies of old world metaverse regulation: 

‘Policy debates’ on ‘regulating the metaverse’ are a distraction.

Humanity is discovering a new frontier for imagination and creation. We should be building cathedrals in the sky.

Instead, we are searching for new ways to pay the tithe to territorially bounded and bankrupt western nation states.

Explain to me why I’m wrong?

It’s almost certain that regulating the metaverse will accelerate and not prevent digital dystopia as nation-states and 20th century institutions attempt to co-opt and commandeer this new frontier.

Remember when multistakeholder internet governance balkanised the internet? 

‘Regulation’ will become a euphemism for state competition and control over the lives, imaginations and destinies of everyone in the metaverse.

It will overwhelmingly favour the West, leading to linguistic, geo-fencing and human barriers that isolate us from each other, all the while maintaining the Westphalian illusion of cartography.

Just kidding, OF COURSE the metaverse should be regulated, you dummy bears! But not by nation-states, not by markets and not by old world institutions.

Real regulation will be constitutional, blockchain based, real-time, transparent and voted on by YOU.

It will be something we have never seen before:
global + legitimate.

The metaverse is a on-ramp into a self-sovereign global governance architecture for everyone on Earth.

What follows are some cursory thoughts on opportunities in the metaverse. I believe the metaverse is a post-nation-state technology, powered by a suite of innovations which will have historic geopolitical significance.

As metaverse markets and blockchain based governance structures evolve, they will rival and replace the crumbling institutions of the West.

Post-Nation State Technology

The CEO of Epic Games had described the metaverse as a “multi-trillion dollar opportunity.” The next-iteration of cyberspace is being built right now, even if it remains decades away.

The big looser will be the nation-state. In my MA Thesis, I defined the nation-state as a physically bounded technology which is slowly being eroded by the spatiality of networks.

If it happens at all, a post Bretton Woods and post Westphalian world-order will emerge online.

The metaverse will integrate this ‘back-end’ infrastructure with an immersive, social and three-dimensional ‘front-end.’

Disruptive IP

The NFL, Fifa, Marvel, Star Wars, DC Comics, Microsoft’s Halo, Sony’s God of War and Capcom’s Street Fighter have all produced experiences and in-game collectibles in Fortnite, including in-game outfits and overlapping marketing activations (source). These collectibles were not virtual assets registered on the blockchain. They could not be transferred out-of-world.

TV industry executives with experience in Maya, Houdini, or other CGI assets will be able to export existing IP directly into metaverse systems, and retain legal ownership. Architects with experience in AUTOCAD can advertise their work to a global virtual community.

Rather than leveraging and incentivising old world brands, emerging online worlds present a historic opportunity for designers, architects, artists, writers and creators to publish and sell their IP in the markets of tomorrow.

Time

Time does not exist in the Metaverse, but it can be coded. This includes perishable goods; a costume, a power-up or the dress of a fairy Godmother, available only until midnight.

This dynamic increases spending, but also has important implications for storytelling, jeopardy, verisimilitude and gamification. 

Hard-coded NFTs and the ownership over virtual commodities they represent, have already led to significant consumer spending. This will only grow as niche communities begin to filter into the mainstream (source).

Immersive Services

Renew your UAE residency at the virtual embassy in Decentraland. Register for school and attend some classes in VR.

Connect your fitness watch/app for a health check with a virtual doctor. Explore a mirror of your city in the metaverse, unlocking access or price reductions in the physical universe.

As a big fan of real-life, i think there are many questions to be asked about the desirability of too much screen time. Equally, some of these innovations are near-term and likely inevitable.

Rome wasn’t build in a day. The metaverse will not be constructed overnight. That said, we are on an accelerated timeline. Previous civilizations took centuries to emerge. A nascent Metaverse will take decades.

After discussing the macro-reasons why the UAE should lean into the virtual economy, this article is about near-term challenges in building a global metaverse. Part II, next week, will look at the opportunities.

*A note on the elephant in the room: I’ve taken several steps to contain Mr. Nakamoto from communicating over this channel. So far efforts to contain my avatar appear to have been successful. My only concern is that Hiro’s AI appears to have discovered twitter.

Computing Power:

Games like Fortnite are able to host 10.7 million players simultaneously, by distributing the compute into 10,000 separate player sessions (source). A year ago I predicted that low-fidelity worlds would be able to host between 700-4000 simultaneous players in the future. Improbable studios in the UK achieved that benchmark recently.

Right now, the compute doesn’t exist to host anywhere close to 1 million citizens in a simultaneous low-fidelity metaverse.

The dream of 1 billion people in a high-fidelity Virtual Reality enabled meta-reality is likely decades away.

No Memory in the Metaverse:

When you destroy a building or cut down a tree in almost all gaming worlds, it “re-spawns” and grows back within a couple of minutes.

From MMPORG gaming to the metaverse, the memory requirements of creating a ‘dynamic’ and ever changing map are simply too great.

It’s unclear how computers would render “time” in a shared reality for millions of players. On the one hand, temporality can be coded into NFTs (see my writing on a perishable blockchain based “virtual energy drink”).

Yet time also introduces jeopardy. A metaverse with history, is also one where your avatar can get hurt, and a virtual building can get torn down. Here there is no re-spawn, no chance to replay the battle; no option to reset time, or virtual assets you have just sacrificed.

Because of this, I believe “time” will become the key asset in the metaverse. Not land.

The idea of the metaverse as a civilizational space and not simply a digital market, is not possible without a rendering of time, and a recording of in-world history. Because of this, “Time” and “History” are among the critical compounds that distinguish the metaverse from a video game.

Big Tech Commission Rates:

Big tech platforms intend to charge up to 47.5% commission on every trade in metaverse worlds, with platforms like Roblux already charging creators a 72% commission.

Once these domains reach sufficient scale, nation-states will feel entitled to levy a digital tax.

Such economics are identical to the efforts of the old telecoms unions - the ITU and others - to charge metered access to the Internet in the early 1990s. I’ll cover this for GenZ and millennial readers in future, but many 1980s brats will remember how close we came to not having a functioning cyberspace.

Exploitative economic practices, geo-fencing and the a lack of trust in western corporations all provide an opportunity for independent blockchain based worlds.

Old World Streaming Infrastructure:

Most contemporary cloud streaming infrastructure belongs to the old world. This does not bode well. A global metaverse is hardly possible if the underlying architecture, infrastructure and protocol is all hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Blockchain based cloud streaming services are emerging. Yet even then, the technical challenges are enormous.

The bandwidth requirements between peak and off-peak hours, the geographical location of servers and the cost of electricity have implications for equal access and the north-south divide.

The current trajectory of metaverse economics is one where the rich world goes to play, and the poor in Taiwan, India and Philippines go to work. Networks that can ameliorate these trends or offset them will prove the most disruptive.

Beyond this, in-game physics, haptic feedback, immersive audio, or realtime face-tracked avatar emotions will all rely on massive amounts of data streamed into the metaverse for every single avatar. Streaming these data requirements seems almost impossible.

Old World Economics vs. Metaverse Markets:

He who controls the metaverse, controls the future. Don’t believe it? Check the numbers.

Fornite has 300 million users. Roblux has 43.2 million users. Around 3.56 billion people use META/Facebook. Now imagine citizens across these early-stage platforms are transacting in virtual currencies, and trading virtual assets oblivious to physical borders.

At this point, the nation-state is a relic.

Whoever controls the infrastructure, protocol and payment layer of emerging virtual asset markets, controls the global financial system of tomorrow.

How Real is Virtual Property Ownership?

Yes, your virtual asset is immutably registered on the blockchain. This “timestamp” may include the geo co-ordinates to your land on any given metamap.

But what if an administrator chooses to alter the in-world user-interface? In the physical world, having your name on a property register doesn’t stop the government building a road over your house. Laws, courts and constitutions do.

Equally, a blockchain record of metaverse land will not protect citizens from de-platforming, re-allocation or substantive alteration on the graphical front-end.

Imagine paying $300,000 for metaverse land, only to wake up a week later and realize a sky-hotel has been activated above your plot. Talk about first world problems. Here DAO governance will likely play an important role.

Interoperability

Right now there are dozens of metaverse worlds, running across various blockchains, with a myriad of coin and tokenisation incentives.

It is the Wild West, with opportunity in abundance for the scrappy few. At some point a consolidation and convergence will take place. Cross-chain interoperability will increase the addressable market, and the depth of the user experiences on offer. One Dubai based techie is already working on this.

An epic battle looms between closed and proprietary/quasi-proprietary architecture vs. a decentralized and open metaverse.

Networks, Policy and Geography: Dubai in the Metaverse

In the interests of distinguishing myself from the trivial H. Nakamoto, I decided it was time to consider an important issue: the role city-states like Dubai can play in the development of a unipolar, global metaverse.

As western culture and capitalism enter a period of late-stage decline, there is an opportunity for emerging countries to shape digital culture and global civilisation. That path will not be easy.

I conceive of the metaverse not simply as a multi-trillion dollar virtual market, but as a civilisational space for the totality of human culture. One metaverse, with 10,000 accents, languages and colours.

Here the UAE has three positional advantages:

1. A Network Hub: The UAE is fast becoming a network state. It is transforming itself through the application of 4iR technologies. As the digital economy absorbs more and more of the traditional economy, the UAE’s embrace of citizen services, blockchain and DeFI will allow it to compete against larger (and slower) economies.
   

2. East Meets West: This isn’t to say geography and geopolitics don’t matter. Positioned between East and West, the UAE is well placed to merge technological solutions at the same time as promoting a metaverse that correspondents to the needs of global society, rather than any single acquisitive nation-state.
   

3. Policy & Regulation Leadership: Being totally irresponsible, my avatar believes that “regulation” is a euphemism for “control.” Hiro grew up in a West with too much regulation, whereas I have spent the past 10 years in the Middle East. The UAE has created a sandbox regulatory environment at ADGM in Abu Dhabi and a successful Fintech Hive at DIFC. There is no reason similar sandbox regulatory environments cannot be created for metaverse innovation.

These are my macro-insights. An article on specific technical opportunities and challenges in the UAE will follow.

Hiro is a character in Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash, an ancient book dating back to 1993. Satoshi Nakamoto is a mythical hero that supposedly invented Bitcoin, a digital currency from the time of cash payments that still gets traded in the underground corners of the contemporary megaverse.

Unfortunately, it’s 2022 in your timeline and the megaverse doesn’t exist. What you optimistically call the ‘metaverse’ is actually a loose collection of confederacies all trying to make a buck, scale an audience and figure out how virtual reality works.

It’s across this virtual wasteland of an archipelago that some idiot has programmed me to deliver Pizza. Imagine having to cross a border and show an ID every time you need to eat, and you’ll understand my apparent lack of zeal.

It was until 2024 that I got my lucky break. As crypto was booming, they went ahead and gave me my own website.

The digital renaissance hasn’t happened yet. This means all of the lands I inhabit look like they have been designed by a non-player-character with zero aesthetic taste. Across this digital expanse of free imagination, the art, architecture and trading system still mimic the physical world. I can communicate in speech and text in over 50 languages, but right now most virtual populations speak English and belong to a twentieth century nation-state. It’s all a little sad.
